Fanbase Music Magazine catches up with David Torrance, and talk about his tracks ‘Why’ and ‘All About The Money’.
Enjoy the read!
Hi David, welcome back to Fanbase Music Magazine. It’s always great to chat with our favorite Scotsman. How is Scotland doing? Can you remind us where in Scotland you are based?
David Torrance and THPSongs are based in a place called Strathaven, which is in the countryside, 18 miles from Glasgow city centre.
You have such a great catalog of music at the moment. If you were to choose out of all of your songs, what is your favourite and why?
I would say my favourite song is ‘All About The Money’ – the reason being, it was the first song I released as an artist, that was down to Ed MacCarthur in Stealth recording studios, suggesting after I had laid down a guide vocal that I should go all the way and do a proper vocal myself on it. So, I make jokes saying that he created a monster.
You have released your single ‘Why’. What is this song about, and what inspired you to write it?
‘Why’ is a bitter love song, I suppose. It is asking the question ‘Why’ someone doesn’t want you, love you, or wants to be with you. The inspiration came from the initial riff at the start of the song that turned into the chorus, and the verses just fell into place.
Where was it recorded, and who else worked on the track?
As I usually do, most of the tracks are recorded in my home studio. I played the rhythm guitar and keyboards. I then brought in Graham Thomas (my go-to lead guitarist), who laid down a wonderful piece of lead guitar. I then brought in Mr Laughlin Allan, who laid down ‘da bass’. After that, all the stems were then sent to Steath Recording Studio, where I recorded all the vocals and mixed and mastered the track, with the help of Ed MacCarthur.

How long did this song take to write, and how long was the recording process?
Some songs take longer than others, but this track was very quickly written. Once I had the initial riff, the rest of the track seemed to fall into place naturally. The recording process took longer than writing the track.
What messages are important for you to express through your music?
I am more melody-oriented when it comes to lyrics. Normally, when writing the song, I will come up with one or two lines, which will usually contain the title, and I then build on that lyrically.
Do you have any other music coming out?
Yes, I do! I have a track that will be released next year on my birthday, which is the 26th of Feb, the track is called ‘The Miracles of Life’ and I am really excited about this one. When I release this track on the 26th of Feb, believe it or not, this will be my 10th release in a row since I released ‘All About The Money’ back in 2021.

If you could give any upcoming musicians advice, what would it be?
In this day and age, it is very hard for musicians, songwriters, and composers to make a decent living, so my advice to any up-and-coming musicians would be, practice, practice, practice, and treat it as a hobby.
In your opinion, are there any other bands and musicians we should be checking out?
I came across this band by accident; they are called ‘The Band Feel’ – if you like Led Zeppelin, you’ll like these guys.
Thank you for doing this interview. Do you have any last messages for our readers?
David Torrance and THPSongs have been working hard, especially over the last 4 years, so as we always say, onwards and upwards.
