Fanbase Music Magazine catches up with Randy, and talk about ‘Cat’s In The Cradle’ and it being featured in a film!
Hi Randy, welcome to Fanbase Music Magazine.
Can you tell us where you’re from and how you got into music?
I am from Humble, Texas. I first got into music in grade school with a singing group followed by forming my own band.
Have you always wanted to be a musician, or is there another profession you would have liked to pursue?
I never wanted to play music for a living. I love to create visual artwork. Painting, drawing, and pen & ink is what I first aspired to do with my life.

How would you describe your sounds and genre?
My music is a fusion of folk, blues, and country rock. The genre that it belongs in is primarily country music.
Who are some of the bands/musicians that have influenced you musically?
Creedence Clearwater Revival, Carl Perkins, John Prine, George Harrison, Emmylou Harris, The Byrds, Tom T Hall, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson and Elvis Presley.

Can you tell us your writing process?
My best songs come early in the morning when the house is quiet and there are no phone calls, texts, e-mails, or responsibilities .
Your latest single, an awesome rendition of Harry Chapin’s ‘Cat’s In The Cradle’ is going to be featured in a film. Can you tell us more about how it came to be that they used one of your versions of the song?
The song and the opportunity to be featured in film that chronicles the journey of “Cat’s In the Cradle” pretty much fell in my lap. The film’s producers decided they wanted me to participate in the conversations regarding the song, its effect, and influence it has had on the world as well as myself. I offhandedly played my version in the filmed segment and the producers as well has Harry’s family loved it.

Where was the track recorded, and who worked on the track?
I recorded my version of “Cat’s” live in studio at The Lobo Ranch in Texas.
All the overdubs were recorded later and mixed by Barry Sanders in Nashville.
What do you prefer more, working in the studio or playing live?
I can’t really say I have a preference. Live playing and studio recording are different in so many respects, yet I get an equal amount of joy from both.

When will the film be released, and where can our readers watch it?
The film, “The 50th Year Anniversary Harry & Sandy Chapin’s “Cat’s In the Cradle” will premier on Amazon Prime, iTunes, and Apple TV the first week of November 2025.
In your opinion, who are some artists and bands that we should check out?
I like Hayes Carll.
Thank you for doing this interview. Do you have any last messages for our readers?
