Shirley Callaghan writes from the heart, channeling loss, disappointment and societal issues to create poignant melodic memoirs that cut through the noise of existence to address real world issues.
Having already touched on themes of human behaviour, narcissism, genocide and wars in her previous releases such as ‘It Will Be Burned’ and ‘Baby Blue’ her new song ‘Quit Fooling Me’ blends emotional storytelling with social observation, capturing the tension between societal decay and emotional decay in a world that feels unjust, where leadership is corrupt and the young and powerless pay the price. With a pulsing melodic guitar riff and steady groove the song moves with an upbeat rhythm reflecting on connection and confusion, and how modern life treats people like commodities, in a world driven by profit, political power and digital distraction.
‘Quit Fooling Me’ is both a personal request and a commentary on a society that often obscures honesty with human warmth and despite the heaviness of the theme, the song holds tightly to hope – insisting – “It’s not time to give up”even as clarity slips away. It can be difficult to love truly in a world that seems increasingly detached.
Shirley is influenced by artists such as Kate Bush, Sinead O’Connor, PJ Harvey, Bob Dylan & Michael Stipe, and has been favorably compared to Dolores O’Riordan with Fanbase Music Magazine calling her “One of the best musicians to come out of Ireland since The Cranberries”.
Shirley previously worked with Songwriters and Producers, Stephen O’Malley and Abe Silva in her home town of Shannon a number of years ago. Stephen and Abe were part of a band called ‘Anova’ formed in New York in 2000 and later worked together on an EP with Shirley called ‘Its Not Enough’. Sadly Abe passed away in 2024 and this is a track he and Stephen had been working on together before he passed away.
‘Quit Fooling Me’’ is dedicated to Abe Silva, Songwriter/Producer/Friend. 1971 to 2024.
Expect a big few months from the artist described as making hypnotic and strikingly haunting, dark and atmospheric music, with an album due for release very soon.
