Gallo Music celebrates 100th Birthday

Gallo Music hits the big 100 
 
On Saturday, 28 February 2026, Gallo Music will officially reach the remarkable milestone of 100 years, joining the ranks of esteemed enterprises that have withstood the test of time. It has been a century of shaping the South African and global musical landscapes.
 
In anticipation of the centenary festivities, Antos Stella, Gallo CEO, hosted an exclusive brunch yesterday morning, Thursday 26 Feb. It was attended by legendary artists from Gallo’s illustrious roster, senior executives from Arena Holdings including Group CEO, Pule Molebeledi, and a significant media presence, reflecting the reverence in which Gallo is held.
 
Distinguished guests included veteran musicians Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse, Hilda Tloubatla of the Mahotella Queens, Moses Ngwenya of Soul Brothers, Claire Johnston and John Leyden of Mango Groove, Ihhashi Elimhlophe and Linah Khama, Nkosana “Bozza” Nkosi and Lebo “Shugasmakx” Mothibe of Skwatta Kamp, as well as family representatives of Rex Rabanye and Lucky Dube.
 
The legendary artists were recognised for their enduring contributions to Gallo’s legacy. The artists spoke about the significant role Gallo played in their craft and careers, reflecting the profound impact they have had on the company and the nation’s musical heritage.
 
Mabuse remarked that Gallo created a foundation for a rich South African music heritage. He regaled the crowd with tales of the rise of Soweto Soul Music that fuelled the rise to the top of acts such as Rex Rabanye of “O Nketsang” fame. He praised Gallo for prioritising artists welfare and thanked the label for providing a conducive environment for creativity to thrive. “Let’s ensure that the future of musicians is safeguarded,” he concluded with singing a part of his famous hit “Burn Out”.
 
Tloubatla opened her speech by rendering “Melodi Ya Lla” sparking a spontaneous sing-along. “This is my company… we started working here in 1964 when I was 22 years old, and they took good care of us. Thank you so much for taking us overseas, we are now internationally recognised artists. It is by God’s grace,” she finished her concluded with a rendition of “Kazet”.

Lerato Rabanye speaking on behalf of Rex’s family appreciated the work of the label. “I hope my father can see from heaven the appreciation of his remarkable creativity,” she said. Her son, Lefentse Makoti also thanked Gallo for preserving his grandfather’s legacy.
 
Thokozani Dube, the son of Lucky Dube accompanied by his brother, Siyanda said his father believed in justice and humanity and telling African stories in truth. “We are humbled and grateful. Thank you for preserving the music and recognising a voice that belonged to the people.”
 
Stella appreciated the support. “Gallo has the history of South Africa in our archive and seeks to protect the copyright of this country. It is proudly South African.  Today represents not only a celebration, but the commencement of a series of commemorative events throughout this landmark year.
“We are pleased to announce that a documentary chronicling Gallo Music’s rich history and untold stories is currently in production. In addition, a special concert will be held to pay tribute to our legendary artists and to showcase the exceptional talent of our musicians. Further activities and activations will be announced in due course,” she said.
 
A presentation of a vintage gramophone was made to Tshepo Mahloele, the chairman of Arena Holdings recognising his role in preserving and protecting South African music legacy.

Additionally, several radio stations will broadcast a curated “Gallo100” playlist on Saturday to honour this historic occasion.
