Bold, Bright, and Built for the Stage – MARENE’s ‘Finchie’ Single & Video (25 July) and ‘Nevermine’ EP (1 August) Are a Sonic Spectacle of Emotion
MARENE explode into their newest era with the release of the single ‘Finchie’ and the genre-spanning EP ‘Nevermine’ – a double-hit of theatre, thunder and emotional punch. With all the sonic spectacle and high-gloss bravado that defines their signature Flash Rock sound, the South African five-piece deliver a bold and expansive body of work that merges raw emotion with stadium-ready swagger.
The single ‘Finchie’ is a heart-on-sleeve, synth-laced anthem soaked in nostalgia and neon. It’s the sound of teenage longing in its purest, most cinematic form – a rush of unrequited love, daydreams and emotional chaos wrapped in soaring choruses and glossy guitars. Produced to perfection and driven by a rhythmic pulse that walks the line between vulnerability and power, it’s one of the band’s most personal yet accessible songs to date. The accompanying music video brings the emotion to life through dreamy visual storytelling and retro-pop aesthetic, enhancing the track’s bittersweet themes with cinematic flair.
Building on the single’s momentum, the EP ‘Nevermine’ is a shapeshifting journey through the band’s many moods and influences. Across five distinct tracks, MARENE showcase both evolution and experimentation: from high-energy covers to remixed fan favourites, each track is engineered to thrill. ‘Boys (Summertime Love)’ reinvents the Sabrina classic with synth-laden sparkle and a playful punch. ‘Reptile’, originally by The Church, becomes a hypnotic descent into shadowy alt-rock drama. And two reimagined staples – ‘Something’s Out There’ and ‘Bad Intentions’ – close the EP with an electrifying nod to the band’s roots, retooled with 2025 production muscle.
Together, ‘Finchie’ and ‘Nevermine’ form a thrilling new chapter for MARENE. They’re not just pushing boundaries – they’re redrawing them entirely. This is theatrical alt-rock with depth, bite and a whole lot of heart.

MARENE ‘Finchie’ (Single) Commentary
- Tyler Duggan: “I wrote ‘Finchie’ when I was 17, sitting alone in my bedroom. It started
as a name – dangerous, striking and strangely endearing – and evolved through
countless versions. At its heart, it’s a classic boy-meets-girl tale, but what sets it apart is
that it’s more than just a story: it’s a feeling, born from loneliness and unrequited love. I
held back release until the production could grow up with me.” - Maronay Todkill: “To me, it’s the sound of a young heart grappling with something as
vast as love. It’s pure, kind and naïvely earnest – the way only first love can be. We pour
ourselves into someone who may never know we exist. ‘Finchie’ shines a light on that
fantasy-driven infatuation, the very essence of youthful yearnings.” - Ozzey Padayachee: “When I first heard the final mix, I was blown away by the raw
emotion. We’re known for our flashy, in-your-face performances, yet here we channel a
tender spirit. The lyrics are surface-level because that’s exactly the point – loving an idea
rather than the real person beneath. It’s a modern Pygmalion and Galatea story.” - Arian Helm: “‘Finchie’ is more than a song – it’s a masterpiece of longing and
vulnerability. Every lyric and chord resonate with moments you’ve felt but never quite
been able to express. We’ve held onto it for so long; now it’s ready to leave its mark.” - Skye Nagel: “There’s something cinematic about ‘Finchie’ – like the opening scene of a
film you know won’t have a happy ending, but you’re captivated, nonetheless. It’s a
teenage fever dream dressed as a love song, capturing that ache of wanting something
so badly it hurts.”

MARENE ‘Nevermine’ (EP) Commentary
- Tyler Duggan: “An EP offers freedom to experiment, and ‘Nevermine’ is our boldest
detour yet. It spans a harder-edged sound, a poignant ballad and remixed staples from
our back catalogue. It’s a glimpse into our evolving future.” - Maronay Todkill: “‘Nevermine’ feels like a ‘what-could-have-been’ moment reimagined.
It bridges nostalgia and foreshadows what’s to come – a true step forward for MARENE.” - Ozzey Padayachee: “We’ve always aimed to make rock you can dance to. With ‘Reptile’
and ‘Boys (Summertime Love)’, we explore new sonic territory – from angsty grit to flirty
fun. It’s our versatile spirit in full display.” - Skye Nagel: “This EP is a controlled detour: sharp, sweet and loud all at once. As a
listener, it reveals a different side of MARENE and underscores our range.” - Romy Suter (EP Photographer): “Having known the band for years, capturing them for
‘Nevermine’ was effortless. I aimed to reflect the earnestness in their music, and hope
the cover resonates as deeply as the tracks themselves.”

MARENE Biography
You’ve never witnessed anything like MARENE – the definitive 21st-century Flash Rock
powerhouse unleashing storm-forged riff eruptions across a neon-highway soundscape,
fusing thunderous guitar anthems with shimmering synths, seismic rhythms and
breath-stealing theatrics.
It all materialised from a dream Tyler Duggan had of being the band he could never see live.
For Tyler, it was never just about the music; it was about the experience. The energy. The
feeling of being part of something unforgettable.
On bass, Ozzey Padayachee anchors the low end with groove-laden precision; Arian Helm’s
lead guitar soars like a comet across the stage; Maronay Todkill’s keyboards and backing
vocals swirl in kaleidoscopic colour; and Skye Nagel’s drumming unleashes a primal
heartbeat that reverberates through your bones. Together, they aren’t just musicians –
they’re architects of adrenaline.
Since 2018, MARENE has detonated the South African scene with relentless momentum.
From their debut singles ‘Time Machine’ and ‘Thrills In The Night’, through the dark-gloss
EPs ‘Something’s Out There’ and ‘After Life’, to the genre-twisting album ‘Rising After
Midnight’, they’ve refused to play it safe. Each release is a calculated collision of
flash-glam-rock swagger, synth-pop hooks and cinematic drama – designed to make your
pulse race.
Their live résumé is equally explosive: a national-TV debut on ‘Expresso’ that left viewers
breathless; headline slots at ‘WinterFest’ and ‘RAMFest’ where pyrotechnics met pulsating
crowds; and, most recently, their 2025 EP ‘Nevermine’ and thunderclap single ‘Finchie’,
which prove MARENE are only accelerating.
When they step on stage, expect an all-out sensory assault – lights, sound, movement and
energy so dense you can almost taste it! MARENE demands a double-take. It’s not just
music – it’s a full-blown spectacle, a cultural kaleidoscope, a challenge to the status quo.
One listen, one show, and you’ll understand … dive headfirst into the storm of MARENE!

Lyrics ‘Finchie’ (03:44) – Clean
White sneakers, short dyed hair
A broken heart, I could never bear
Style jeans, she walks so fine
And if I stare, I lose track of time
Golden eyes, her soft lips
If only I could sneak a kiss
From the girl who’s in my mind
Beautiful, if only she was mine
My heart would break today
If I let it end this way
Finchie, don’t blame me
You stole my only heart
Don’t break me, Finchie
I’ve given all I’ve got
She’s a girl who looks punk rock
And when I stare, time comes to a stop
For these eyes will never see
A girl as perfect as Finchie
She’s young, she’ll never know
All the times, I’ve had to let her go
It’s a love that could have been
It’s a love that should have been
Finchie, don’t blame me
You stole my only heart
Don’t break me, Finchie
I’ve given all I’ve got
Don’t blame me
You stole my only heart12
Don’t break me, Finchie
I’ve given all I…
You say you care, but you never want to hear
The things I do, all the things I do
You say you only want the truth
The truth is, Finchie, I only want you
Finchie, don’t blame me
You stole my only heart
Don’t break me, Finchie
I’ve given all I’ve got
Finchie, don’t blame me
You stole my only heart
Don’t break me, Finchie
I’ve given all I’ve got
Finchie, don’t blame me
Finchie, you stole my only heart
Finchie, don’t break me
Woah Finchie
Before we even start
Finchie, don’t blame me
You stole my only heart
Lyrics ‘Boys (Summertime Love)’ (03:21) – Clean
Sunshine’s down, so come to town
Set your body free
Hold me tight, my love tonight
Tell me you believe
Everybody, summertime love
You’ll remember me
Everybody, summertime love
Be my lover, be my baby13
Boys, boys, boys
I’m looking for the good times
Boys, boys, boys
Get ready for my love
Boys, boys, boys
I’m looking for the good times
Boys, boys, boys
I’m ready for your love
Stay around, the sun goes down
Babe, I’m feeling right
Take a chance with love romance
Have some fun tonight

Everybody has gotta come
Don’t stop, don’t move
And just get your body in the groove
I said hey, I said who
I said me, I said you, gotta get in the groove14
Boys, boys, boys
I’m looking for the good times

Lyrics ‘Reptile’ (04:47) – Clean
Too dangerous to keep
Too feeble to let go
And you want to bite the hand
Should have stopped this long ago
Go now, you’ve been set free
Another month or so you’ll be gorging on me
With your lovely smile
I see you slither away with your skin and your tail
Your flickering tongue and your rattling scales
Like a real reptile
Had you coiled round my arm
How could you ever know?
How I loved your diamond eyes
But that was long ago
Go now, you’ve been set free
Another month or so you’ll be poisoning me
With your lovely smile
I see you slither away with your skin and your tail
Your flickering tongue and your rattling scales
Like a real reptile
And I should have believed Eve
She said we had to blow
She was the apple of my eye
It wasn’t long ago
Go now, you’ve been set free
Another month or so you’ll be torturing me
With your lovely smile
I see you slither away with your skin and your tail
Your flickering tongue and your rattling scales
Like a real reptile, oh
Go, go now, you’ve been set free
Another month or so you’ll be poisoning me
With your lovely smile
I see you slither away with your skin and your tail
Your flickering tongue and your rattling scales
Like a real reptile
Lyrics ‘Something’s Out There’ (2025 Remix) (04:16) – Clean
Don’t fear, my dear
Don’t hear the sounds
Creeping up the stairs
They’re under your bed
They’re in your head
Hush now
Stay down
And close your eyes
You’re afraid they’ll see
Your heartbeat
Pull the thread, you’re dead
The shadows crawling out
Look out
Something’s out there
And you’re in danger
Someone’s worst fear
A mysterious stranger
Something’s out there
And you’re in danger
Something’s out there
Don’t look,
Can’t breathe
Where could it be?
Playing hide and seek
In the night
Will it bite?
Don’t scream
Don’t cry
It’s out tonight
If you only knew
The myth is true
And it’s watchin’ you
The shadows crawling out
Look out
Something’s out there
And you’re in danger
Someone’s worst fear
A mysterious stranger
Something’s out there
And you’re in danger
Something’s out there
Look out
Something’s out there
And you’re in danger
Someone’s worst fear
A mysterious stranger
Something’s out there
And you’re in danger
Something’s out there
Look out
Lyrics ‘Bad Intentions’ (2025 Remix) (04:15) – Clean
Traversing through the night
A figure that can’t be seen
He watches you turn the light off
As he waits across the street
Now she’s burnt into his mind
As he approaches the patio, yeah
What is he gonna’ find?
Such an exciting scenario
So close to the edge
Hanging by a thread
So close to the edge
He’s better off dead
Now he’s coming for you
So whatcha gonna do
He’s got
Some bad intentions
Can’t stop
This mind invention
One life
Stripped to pieces
Missed out
On the extra features
She’s got silky, soft, red hair
Glowing like a flame
She exhales contorted air
As she hangs her head in shame
Now she knows her hours up
No tears in her eyes
Just a minor setup
It’s not how everybody dies
So close to the edge
Hanging by a thread
So close to the edge
He’s better off dead
Now he’s coming for you
So whatcha gonna do
He’s got
Some bad intentions
Can’t stop
This mind invention
One life
Stripped to pieces
Missed out
On the extra features
Bad intentions
Bad intentions
Bad intentions
Bad intentions
Watching, waiting like a thief in the night
So close, so far, and it’s losing sight
Open the wound, and let the pain out
He hated, she loved and it leaves no doubt
He’s got
Some bad intentions
Can’t stop
This mind invention
One life
Stripped to pieces
Missed out
On the extra features
Bad intentions
Bad intentions
Bad intentions
