Sonique talks to Fanbase Music Magazine about her new single and video ‘Black & White’.
Enjoy the read!
Hi Sonique, welcome back to Fanbase Music Magazine. Last time we spoke, you had released your first ballad, ‘Uncaged’. Now you’ve released ‘Black & White’. Can you tell how that whole experience was releasing the song?
The whole experience has been awesome, because I have been waiting almost a year to release ‘Black & White’, it is one of my favourites!
For people who don’t know you, can you describe your sound and how you got into music?
The music I write is very raw and full of energy. I try to be as honest as possible in my lyrics with an upbeat twist.
I would say the genre of my music is pop/pop-rock.
Which bands are on your daily playlist now?
Tash Sultana
Rainbow Kitten surprise
Yungblud
Arctic Monkeys
Milky Chance

Do you feel these bands influence your own style of music you make?
I feel like they do play a role in the style of music that I write. I like to stay unique in my style but I do take inspiration from the artists that I listen to.
Your latest track, Black & White, speaks of Anxiety and overthinking. Can you tell us your open experiences and how this song was written?
I have always struggled with overthinking, I don’t want to put any lables on it but I would say it’s quite obsessive and hardly ever stops. I am one of those people that suffer in silence, I don’t like to burden people with my anxiety and overthinking. Sometimes it gets super hectic and that was when I wrote this song, I was in a head space where I just got frustrated with my thoughts. This song is more than a song, it’s a peace of my soul. Sometimes when you crash out, you need a song to scream/cry/ sing out loud to and this is that song for me. My hope is that anyone out there who suffers in silence, that this song will be your crash out song too.
Where was the track recorded, and who worked it?
The track was recorded with Mark Beling, we both worked really hard to get this song perfect, and it was so much fun in the making as well.

What did Mark Beling bring to the song, and how was it working with him again?
Mark Beling knows a lot about Rock music and I think having him produce this song, was the best decision, because he literally brought the song to life. We actually really enjoyed making this song together, there was a lot of experimenting and freedom of creativity with this song which was so much fun.
What was the vibe like in the studio? Even though the lyrics speak of a heavy subject matter, the music itself seemed very catchy. Was that the kind of vibe while recording it?
The vibe was awesome! We both connected a lot with the lyrics and I think because of that we both had the same vision for it. We rocked out!!
How do you deal with overthinking and anxiety? Do you have any advice for people who experience similar things?
It’s not an easy emotion to deal with because it comes when you least expect it. I have learnt how to recognise when I am going down that path, which is the first step to controlling yourself. After that I talk to myself as if I was talking to a person. I know it sounds crazy but it really helps.
If that doesn’t work I wet my face and breathe in for 5, hold for 3, breathe out for 4. This helps because it distracts you from thinking about things and refocuses your mind.

What is your hope for the song for anyone who listens to it?
My hope for anyone listening is that this becomes your crash out song, I hope that this song helps you feel more seen and less alone.
You are expected to be releasing a music video for it. What can you tell us about it, and when will it be released?
The music video is OUT NOW on YouTube!
It is a really cool concept, the different characters symbolize all of the voices in our head when we are overthinking.
It was a lot of fun to film and dress up as all of those characters.
Who worked on the music video?
My videographer Rici Martins, he is also a music artist named SEVVEN

Do you have new music coming out?
I will be releasing new music in 2026!
Do you have any upcoming shows?
I have a few I’m working on and hopefully a few gigs in December too. I’m super excited to get performing again!
Thank you for doing this interview. Do you have any last messages for our readers?
If you are someone who can relate to ‘Black & White’, just know that you are not alone. Trust your intuition because when you don’t it leads to overthinking. We overthink when we are in a place we are not meant to be in. Try and settle your mind so you can move forward.
